Why is everything in DC (concerning local government) named the District of Columbia dept of whatever except for the name Washington DC . Since the territory/district is named Columbia why not just go by that. Everything is DC court, dmv, police/fire ems, schools etc so what is the purpose of having the name Washington why not just call everything District of Columbia or Washington since the two were merge in 1871

Originally, the district, which was named the District of Columbia, and the city, named Washington, were two separate entities. They had separate governments. Then, in 1871, they were merged into one entity. See article below.

To honor the first and arguably the best President. To change the name of a city would confuse the the whole world. They changed the name of Saigon to Ho Chi Minh City, but the air port code is still SGN. Sorry, but if you really want to just say DC go right ahead. When I do some people want to know where in British Columbia I am talking about. This is my help from Washington, D.C. United States of America. Please pick an answer as the best answer, even if it is not mine.

When the Founding Fathers were trying to decide where to put the capitol of the new country, they could not put it in any state, due to jealousy. Thus they created a special District - where it is now. It is called it the District of Columbia to distinguish it from any existing or possible future state named Columbia.

Actually the city of Washington wasn't merged with the District of Columbia in 1871. The cities of Washington and Georgetown as well as Washington County were dissolved. Actually license plates and driver's license issued by the District of Columbia both say "Washington, DC". Very few people on the east coast actually call it Washington, DC. It's either simply Washington or DC, but never both. In the DC area, it's usually just referred to as "The District". It's probably the same reason that New Yorkers still call Avenue of the Americas by 6th Ave. and the RFK Bridge as the Triboro Bridge. History carries a lot of weight.

Why change Constantinople to Istanbul? Never made much sense and changing Washington DC just to DC or just to Washington will make it less Washington DC sounding... see?

In my opinion it is because people are not bright. When most people (tourists, new residents, etc...) come to Washington DC, they see a building or an organizations and assume that it's a Federal Government building. So to differentiate between local DC government buildings and Federal US government buildings, they leave the DC in place. In the same vain, often times you'll see that some buildings and organizations will place a US in front of their names so people will know they are going to a national/federal office and not a local one
