The Mall in DC is the park area between the Lincoln Memorial and the Capitol , not a shopping mall! Here is a link to shopping in DC: http://washington.dc.retailguide.com/ml1dc.htm
2 :
Pentagon City is in Arlington, Virginia, and is a multi-story mall, easily accessible by Metro (subway). There isn't a shopping "mall" in the District of Columbia proper, unless you count the Shops at Georgetown, which isn't really Metro friendly (you can take a Connector bus from the downtown core to Georgetown though). The District of Columbia has many stand-alone stores but not the kind of shopping mall you typically find in suburbia.
3 :
Haha. It's called the National Mall. Unfortunately, it's not a REAL mall, it's like one huge park. There's lots of things there - Lincoln Memorial, Capitol Building (that's where Congress meets,) Washington Monument, the Smithsonian museums, World War II Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial... So yeah. Not as fun as shopping, but still pretty cool. By the way, I might see you there! My school's going Wednesday-Friday, but Friday itself we'll be at Hershey Park in Pennsylvania

Since Washington D.C. is not a state....?
will state funds (such as the hope scholarship) pay for this school. Technically I understand that it is "out of state" but it isnt in another state either. Are there any special case rules regarding the District of Columbia??

President of the United States Questions?!?!?!?!?! Please Help! I will award best answer!?

President of the United States Questions?!?!?!?!?! Please Help! I will award best answer!?
Hello there everyone! Let me just sit and take a breather... I am having an issue with my career choice. I want to be the President of the United States of America as my career when I turn 35 so I have many many questions. I am not planning on changing my mind about my career, but I do have some questions. I am 15 years old and in the 10th grade. I am planning on going to the U.S. Marines Officer Academy after high school and after I graduate from the Marines I am planning on going to Harvard School of Law to study to become a lawyer. Then after my totally long 4 years or more of College I am going to run for Mayor of Orange County, then after I am elected and run my course I am planning on running for the Governor of a State or a Senator of one of the States. Then... if time permits I would love to run for Mayor of Washington DC (District of Columbia). After me working up my political career I want to run for President of the United States in the Election of 2028. My questions are that if I am 15 now... and my Birthday is on August 26th that means I will turn exactly 35 on August 26th 2028... Now, do I have to be 35, as required by the constitution, to run in the election do I have to be 35 when I sign up to run in the election or be 34 to sign up and then be 35 when I run on November 4th 2028... or do I have to be 35 when I sign up to be in the election? Another thing is HOW DO YOU GET ON THE BALLOT? One last question is if I have done some Internet searches, picture postings, and blog posts that most of the hormonal teenagers in America do... will it affect my chances in running? I have no police records or anything but will this stuff come back to bite me in the butt whenever I run?! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH AND I WILL AWARD BEST ANSWER!!!!!! ------- President Zachary J. Downs

Article Two of the US Constitution says that by the time of their inauguration, the President and Vice President must be natural born citizens, be at least thirty-five years old, and lived in the Unites States for at least fourteen years. According to this, you can run for president as long as you will be 35 by January 20th. I am not sure how you get on the ballot but I do not think that will be a problem after you have had lots of experience in politics. I wouldn't worry about your internet searches. I have never heard of a presidential candidate being harmed by something they did as a child, ie under 18.

This occured last spring and summer (1999). 2) The primary season (which went from Januray until June) is characterized by the candidates battling each other within their parties. You can see most of the debates from this process at http://www.issues2000.org/archive.htm. The debates ended in March, when the main contenders (Bush & Gore) beat their main rivals (McCain & Bradley) by garnering sufficient primary delegates to win the convention. 3) The primaries decide the number of delegates for each candidate at the convention, where the candidate wins his party's nomination. Bush & Gore were formally nominated at their conventions in July and August; the third parties had conventions from June to August. 4) The candidate also selects his running mate around the time of the conventions. 5) The "general election" season is characterized by battling between the Democrats and Republicans (i.e., Bush attacking Gore and vice versa). The debates between them will begin in a couple of weeks. 6) The general election is on Nov 7. Which supreme court case should i do?

Which supreme court case should i do?
These are all the ones i found interesting, which one should i do and please give me a link to it's information: Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier Citation: 484 U.S. 260,108 S.Ct. 562 (1988) Concepts: Censorship/State Rights v. Students’ Free Press Rights Facts Kathy Kuhlmeier and two other journalism students wrote articles on pregnancy and divorce for their school newspaper. Their teacher submitted page proofs to the principal for approval. The principal objected to the articles because he felt that the students described in the article on pregnancy, although not named, could be identified, and the father discussed in the article on divorce was not allowed to respond to the derogatory article. The principal also said that the language used was not appropriate for younger students. When the newspaper was printed, two pages containing the articles in question as well as four other articles approved by the principal were deleted. Issue Wallace v. Jaffree Citation: 472 U.S. 38 (1985) Concepts: Moment of Silence/State Rights v. Establishment Clause Facts The parents of three children attending public school in Alabama challenged the constitutionality of an Alabama law which authorized a one minute period of silence in all public schools for meditation or voluntary prayer. Mills v. Board of Education of District of Columbia Citation: 348 F.Supp. 866 (1972) Concept: Education for Exceptional Children Equal Protection v. State Rights Facts Seven children of school age were denied education because they were mentally retarded, emotionally disturbed, hyperactive, or had behavioral problems. The Board of Education did not provide schooling for these exceptional children, violating controlling statutes and their own board regulations. It was also estimated that 18,000 similar “exceptional children in the Washington, D.C., area were not in school. The D.C. school system admitted that it had failed its duty to provide these children with publicly supported education suited to their individual needs. It also had failed to provide prior hearings and periodic reviews of each exceptional student case. West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette Citation: 319 U.S. 624 (1943) Concepts: Flag Salute/State Rights v. Establishment Clause Facts The West Virginia State Board of Education required by state law that all students salute the flag and recite the pledge of allegiance as a part of their daily routine. Students who refused were suspended, declared unlawfully absent, and subject to delinquency proceedings. Parents of such students were also subject to a fine or imprisonment. Several Jehovah’s Witnesses, who were citizens of West Virginia, sought from the court an injunction to stop the West Virginia State Board of Education from requiring the pledge and flag salute. Issue Reno v. A.C.L.U. Citation: 117 S. Ct. 2329 (1997) Concepts: Free Speech/Censorship/Obscene/Indecent/Cyberspace Facts The 1996 Federal Communications Decency Act sought to protect minors from “indecent and offensive Internet materials. Gun Control Advocates webpage?
can someone please help me find a webpage featuring an argument for gun control. I can find plenty of gun enthusiast's opinions in the NRA archives about why we should be allowed to bear arms. But, I am having trouble finding pages representing the opposite. I am looking for an essay-type page, but not an essay someone wrote for school or something, just an argument, with facts, fighting for gun regulation or even the complete banishment of firearms. oh and extra kudos to the person that can help me find a breakdwon (in plain english) of that Washington DC courtcase: District of Columbia v. Why is Obama punishing Washington D.C. children?

Why is Obama punishing Washington D.C. children?
That's right. Step right up liberals and answer this question, because I want an answer. "School choice advocates are trying to save the District of Columbia voucher program, which is targeted for virtual elimination in Congress’ proposed $405-billion omnibus spending bill. The school choice supporters think the termination of the D.C. program could have national significance." http://www.cnsnews.com/public/content/article.aspx?RsrcID=44063 So. Why is Obama and his drone Democrats eliminating school choice for these children who's parents are trying to use a program that will get them out of these crappy government schools? I'll give you a hint and it ryhmes with UNIONS. Obama is paying back his campaign supporters of the teachers unions. So do you liberals agree with this plan? We're talking about the grade school children of Washington D.C.....not college vouchers. Why should they suffer? I thought Obama cared about children. I tried to find one your favorite liberal media outlets for the source, but I couldn't seem to find a story on it. Neat huh? Nice job "daypooper". Bash: You're an idiot. You missed the whole damn point. Obama sends his kids to private schools in Washington....why? Because the public schools suck. Throwing money at school with crime in them doesn't help. Oh, the government does such a good job at education huh?

What about Faux News. You must spend lots of time watching your guys at Faux News.

When you want to get the best advice on which way to go, you look at the experts for their advice. Ask someone about the medical field, you asked Doctors and Nurses, ask about the car industry, you ask automakers. Ask about education and you ask teachers. And they can tell you exactly why the voucher system is an elitist way to separate the children. Instead of sending them to other schools, they should invest in the school system (which is underfunded by alot), and fix it.
3 :
Vouchers hurt the public schools, the public school teachers, and the public school students who didn't get selected for the voucher program. Obviously, you know that pulling money and resources out of a state run school, and placing those monies and resources in a private school would hurt the public school. Since a tiny fraction of students are selected for vouchers, it is YOU who are demanding that we punish the VAST MAJORITY of DC children for the sake of a few lucky ones.

Is the nursing program competitive UDC and University of Maryland?
I'm currently a college student in Ohio and I plan on transferring to Washington, D.C in the next year or so. I was looking at two different schools, University of District Columbia and University of Maryland and I really couldn't find too much information on their nursing programs. But I wanted to know if the nursing programs are competitive there and how competitive are they? Also if there are any other schools in the metro area that have good nursing programs please speak!! Thanks, a college student looking for more in life and in a nursing program.

In general, nursing is kind of competitive, but its still very manageable for those that are interested in this field. If you want to be a nurse, you would have to graduate from a school that is accredited in nursing, then pass the licensing exam. I can't find anything about UDC and accreditation in nursing at all, so I think that is probably a school that you should skip. If you want to go to school in DC, you should check out Georgetown and Howard University instead. Both of them are accredited in nursing. For University of Maryland, only the Baltimore campus is accredited in nursing. Johns Hopkins University is probably one of the best for nursing and its something you should look into as well. Other schools that you should look into: Arizona State, University of Arizona, University of Washington at Seattle, Auburn University, University of Alabama, UC Irvine, UCLA, University of San Diego, University of San Francisco, San Jose State, San Francisco State, CSU Long Beach, CSU LA, San Diego State, University of Colorado at Denver, University of Connecticut at Storrs, Universtiy of Delaware at Newark, Florida State, University of Florida, University of Miami in Florida, Emroy University, DePaul University, University of Illinois at Chicago, Purdue University, University of Iowa, University of Louisville, Louisiana State, Boston College, Northeastern University, Michigan State, University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus, University of Mississippi, University of Missouri in Columbia, the one in St Louis, and the one in Kansas City, SUNY Binghampton, New York University, Columbia University, University at Buffalo - The State University of New York, Duke University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Ohio State, University of Cincinnati, UPenn, Temple University, University of Pittsburgh (i heard this one is very good) Villanova University, Clemson University, University of South Carolina, Texas A&M (the college station, TX campus), Texas Tech, University of Texas at Austin, and Gonzaga University I would recommend that you apply to as many of these as possible. Applying to more only helps you, especially when nursing is such a popular field. You can also use this list as guidance. Even though these are graduate programs (MSN) many of them have undergrad programs as well: http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-nursing-schools/rankings

What is the purpose of having the name Washington in front of DC?

What is the purpose of having the name Washington in front of DC?
Why is everything in DC (concerning local government) named the District of Columbia dept of whatever except for the name Washington DC . Since the territory/district is named Columbia why not just go by that. Everything is DC court, dmv, police/fire ems, schools etc so what is the purpose of having the name Washington why not just call everything District of Columbia or Washington since the two were merge in 1871
Washington, D.C. - 7 Answers

Originally, the district, which was named the District of Columbia, and the city, named Washington, were two separate entities. They had separate governments. Then, in 1871, they were merged into one entity. See article below.
2 :
To honor the first and arguably the best President. To change the name of a city would confuse the the whole world. They changed the name of Saigon to Ho Chi Minh City, but the air port code is still SGN. Sorry, but if you really want to just say DC go right ahead. When I do some people want to know where in British Columbia I am talking about. This is my help from Washington, D.C. United States of America. Please pick an answer as the best answer, even if it is not mine.
3 :
When the Founding Fathers were trying to decide where to put the capitol of the new country, they could not put it in any state, due to jealousy. Thus they created a special District - where it is now. It is called it the District of Columbia to distinguish it from any existing or possible future state named Columbia.
4 :
Actually the city of Washington wasn't merged with the District of Columbia in 1871. The cities of Washington and Georgetown as well as Washington County were dissolved. Actually license plates and driver's license issued by the District of Columbia both say "Washington, DC". Very few people on the east coast actually call it Washington, DC. It's either simply Washington or DC, but never both. In the DC area, it's usually just referred to as "The District". It's probably the same reason that New Yorkers still call Avenue of the Americas by 6th Ave. and the RFK Bridge as the Triboro Bridge. History carries a lot of weight.
5 :
Why change Constantinople to Istanbul? Never made much sense and changing Washington DC just to DC or just to Washington will make it less Washington DC sounding... see?
6 :
Tradition
7 :
In my opinion it is because people are not bright. When most people (tourists, new residents, etc...) come to Washington DC, they see a building or an organizations and assume that it's a Federal Government building. So to differentiate between local DC government buildings and Federal US government buildings, they leave the DC in place. In the same vain, often times you'll see that some buildings and organizations will place a US in front of their names so people will know they are going to a national/federal office and not a local one

( o _ 0 ) Did track officials violate her 1st Amendment rights? Your thoughts?
Wed Jan 16, 5:04 PM ET WASHINGTON - A high school track star has been disqualified from a meet because officials said the custom-made outfit she wears to conform to her Muslim faith violated competition rules. Juashaunna Kelly, a senior at the District of Columbia's Theodore Roosevelt High School, has the fastest mile and 2-mile times of any girl runner in the city this winter. She was disqualified from Saturday's Montgomery Invitational indoor track and field meet. Kelly was wearing the same uniform she has worn for three seasons while running for Theodore Roosevelt's cross-country and track teams. The custom-made, one-piece blue and orange unitard covers her head, arms, torso and legs. Over the unitard, she wears the same orange and blue T-shirt and shorts as her teammates. The outfit allows her to compete while adhering to her Muslim faith, which forbids displaying any skin other than her face and hands.

My initial reaction is that anyone that wears anything other than the assigned uniform is violating said rules. That said, i respect her desire to conform to her religion but she also has to conform to competition rules.
2 :
I think that is ridiculous - she is not going to get an edge by wearing a skin tight uniform as she is wearing the same clothing the others wear over the top - Im in Australia and remember Kathy Freeman running the 100m in the Olympics in a uniform or costumer very much like what your talking about - it was ok for the Olympics so why not a school meet?? Stupid!!
3 :
She needs to remake her uniform to one color.. she has to adhere to the rules regardless if she wants to run.. they are not saying she can't wear the leotard, they understand why she wears it... it just has to be one solid color- instead of one sleeve blue and one orange.. they both need to be the same color
4 :
Disqualifying her was in really bad taste, I am not sure if it violated her 1st amendment rights though. I would like to see why they felt like it was a violation. More clothes would seem to be a henderence to her running, not an advantage. I am sure there will be a lawsuit over this.

IMO, her rights (PROVIDED THAT SHE IS A LEGAL RESIDENT OF THE U.S.A.) were violated, especially since there has been precedent set for three seasons prior. Where is ACLU when they are _needed_??

If taking PRAY out of our schools, not allowing our children to have 'Christmas' plays, or Easter plays, is NOT a violation of the 1st Amendment, then her being barred is ALSO not a violation. SEPERATION OF CHURCH AND STATE. It is offending to Christians to have to "see" her dressed differently BECAUSE of her RELIGION. What's good for the goose, is good for the gander

Is the University of the District of Columbia a good school?
I plan on getting a bachelors in Respiratory Therapy. However I'm joining the Coast Guard as well. The program for the Coast Guard is called "College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative" (CSPI.) The University of the District of Columbia is the only school that offers a Respiratory Therapy bachelors and the CSPI program as well. I'm 19, grew up in New York, current GPA is a 3.7 and I have 1 more semester until I graduate with an Associates in Humanities, and planned on going to SUNY Stony Brook but found out the Coast Guard didn't offer the program there. So right now I'm stuck between Stony Brook or going to Washington DC where I've only been for 1 week out of my entire life! I loved it there!

The University of DC (UDC) is NOT a particularly good school, sadly. While (barely) accredited, it continually has problems of one sort or another. About the only folks who attend UDC are folks who live in DC and have no other options. I would not recommend attending UDC unless there is truly no other option. On the other hand, SUNY Stony Brook is a high quality school that has a solid academic reputation. It has a nice campus with residential housing, a strong faculty, and no problems in keeping its accreditation
